I’m a hugger.
Its true. Most likely, when you come to the studio, I’ll greet you with a handshake and leave you with a hug. And I’ll tell you I’m a hugger and its just what I do.
The other day, I had the honor of photographing a very special young boy with autism. It was my first experience photographing an autistic child and I was feeling a bit nervous about it, honestly. I wanted to capture his beautiful smile, when it popped up. I wanted to capture the special connection with his family. And I wondered if I could. If I could be patient enough, or quiet enough, or observant enough to see the magic when it happened.
And then, something remarkable happened. Out of the blue, he turned to me and hugged me. And with out words, and in his own unique way, he told me it was ok, because he was a hugger, too.
I guess I found a kindred hugger. And I saw his smile and his love for his family. His hug gave me permission to have faith that I could do it. And it was one of my most moving family sessions ever.
More from the Nelson family in a bit… but for now, I’m gonna hug ya, because its what I do.
